Hello web explorers! Today, I’m taking you on an exciting adventure: freelancing. Hold tight, because becoming a freelancer is a journey full of challenges, lessons, and freedom!
On the agenda: the challenges of the first steps, the mistakes to avoid — yes, the ones that everyone makes at least once — and above all, why persevering in this beautiful freelance adventure is well worth it. To enrich our discussion, I have a special guest: a seasoned freelance web designer from Dawa Web Agency who will share his experience..
The challenges of starting out as a freelancer
“Hi! Nice to chat with you today. So, to start, tell us about the challenges you faced when you first started your freelance journey.”
“Ah, the beginnings… it was both exciting and destabilizing. When I took my first steps as a freelance web designer, I had this idealized vision: freedom, and creativity galore. But the reality was quite different. The biggest challenge was finding my first clients. I had neither a reputation nor a solid portfolio. I remember those long hours sending prospecting emails without any response.”
“A real marathon indeed! And how did you overcome that?”
“I understood that word of mouth could become my best ally. I called on my personal network, and participated in local events. It took time, but little by little the projects arrived. Even if the search for clients remains very complicated and energy-consuming.”
“Yes, I understand. You have to be persistent. But I imagine that the challenges didn’t stop there… Administrative management, for example?”
“Exactly! Invoicing, accounting, tax returns… a real headache. I spent way too much time on it and it was very stressful. Finally, I decided to outsource the accounting and call on a professional. This allowed me to focus on what I do best: create.”
“A wise strategy! And working alone, isn’t that too much of a burden?”
“Yes, at first it was difficult. Moving from the energy of a team to the isolation of a solo office is not easy. But I found solutions: joining freelance communities and working in coworking. It allows you to create connections, and break the routine while remaining focused on your work.”
Mistakes to avoid
“Having coffee with other freelancers or clients must feel good! Now let’s talk about mistakes to avoid. What are the ones you’ve made?”
“The first was to underestimate my prices. For fear of losing customers, I offered prices that were too low. But that quickly frustrated me.”
“Yes, I understand that working without financial recognition must weigh… So what is the lesson to be learned?”
“You need to have confidence in the value of your work. Offering fair rates helps attract clients who truly respect your expertise.”
“Very true! Another mistake to avoid?”
“Accept all projects, even those that did not match my skills or that did not interest me. Today, I focus on projects that motivate me and that enhance my skills. Learning to say no is essential.”
“Knowing how to say no, a real superpower! And contracts, did you think about them from the start?”
“Not at all, and it cost me dearly… late payments, misunderstandings. Now, I always formalize the terms of the collaboration with a contract, even for small projects.”
“Message received: still a contract! And the working hours, a real pain for many freelancers, right?”
“Yes, at first I worked all the time. I answered calls and emails at all hours. But eventually, it exhausted me mentally. Now, I have fixed hours. Before the hour, it is not the hour; after the hour, it is no longer the hour! But I remain available almost 10 hours a day for my clients.”
“An exemplary discipline! And to stay on top of new trends, how do you organize yourself?”
“I had neglected it at first, caught up in the perpetual search for clients. But it is crucial to train regularly. Today, I dedicate a few hours a week to documenting myself and taking training courses. It allows me to remain competitive.”
A note of hope for becoming a freelancer
“Great approach! So, is it worth persevering as a freelancer?”
“Absolutely! Despite the challenges and mistakes, persevering as a freelancer is extremely rewarding. Today, I choose projects that I am passionate about, I collaborate with inspiring clients and I enjoy true freedom.”
“A great example of success! Any last advice for people who want to get into entrepreneurship and freelancing?”
“Build your network, invest in your brand, and most importantly, be patient. Success takes time.”
“Thank you for this valuable advice and this great discussion!”
What an inspiring adventure! So remember this: while the first steps in freelancing are often marked by obstacles, challenges are part of the journey. But the destination is well worth it.
Laborious client searches, management errors or unbalanced schedules are stages that almost all freelancers go through. But don’t be afraid to make mistakes, because they are the breeding ground for your growth.
With perseverance, a good strategy and a big dose of passion, anything becomes possible. Independence offers the freedom to choose inspiring projects and collaborate with people who motivate you. Believe in your potential, show resilience and never hesitate to evolve.
Come on, I’ll let you explore new web horizons. And remember, every little step counts. See you soon!
