Hello everyone! Today we’re going to talk about your business’s online presence and the mistakes to avoid when building your website.
You already know that a website is crucial for your brand image. But there are still too many companies that struggle to be efficient on the internet, because they want a cheap and quick website. This very often leads to a sloppy and failed website that drives potential customers away.
While creating a website may seem simple, it is nevertheless easy to make mistakes that can compromise the effectiveness of your website and therefore the reputation of your business or your brand.
Examples include not having a clear objective, not designing for your users, not focusing on the content of your website, not using SEO, or not testing your website before putting it online.
So, to avoid these errors, I will give you some tips.
Let’s start with the discussion I had with an entrepreneur wishing to create a website, in order to explain to him the importance of having a clear objective for the creation of his website:

“Hi! So, you want to create a website for your business? That’s great! But do you already have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish with your website?”
“Uh, not really. I don’t really know where to start…”

“Do not panic! Before launching headlong into the creation of your website, it is important to determine a clear objective. This will help you design an effective and relevant website.”
“Oh ok, I didn’t know. But how do I determine the purpose of my website?”

“Well, the first thing to do is think about your target audience. Who are the people you want to reach with your website? What are their expectations and needs? By answering these questions, you can choose the type of website that best suits the users of your website.”
“Okay I see. And how do I choose the type of website?”

“It’s simple! If your target audience is interested in buying online, you can create an e-commerce website. If you want to provide information on a specific topic, a news website or blog would be more appropriate. Just think carefully about the needs of your target audience.”
“Ok, I’m starting to understand. But then, how do I make my website effective?”

“After defining the purpose and type of website, focus on your website structure and content that is relevant to your target audience. For an e-commerce website, highlight product information and detailed images to make it easier to buy online. For an informational website, make sure the information is easily accessible and understandable.”
“It is clearer. By having a clear goal for my website, I can also better focus on the features and tools I need to achieve that goal.”

“Exactly! For example, for an e-commerce website, you need an online payment platform and an inventory management system. For a news website, you need a content management system to facilitate regular updates. Thus, by directly identifying the tools needed to achieve your goal, you save time and money.”
“Yes, I’m stupid not to have thought of it sooner. But how can I know if my website is working well?”

“That’s a great question! With a clear objective, you will be able to measure the success of your website using performance indicators such as the number of visitors, the conversion rate, the time spent on the site and the bounce rate*.”
* Bounce rate is a percentage that measures the number of visitors who leave a website after visiting a single page without visiting other pages on the same website.
“Thank you so much for all the advice, I feel much more confident now!”

“My pleasure! Remember that the key to success for an effective and relevant website at low cost is to define a clear objective from the start. This is going to be easy for you now!”
You now understand that setting a clear objective for building your website is key to maximizing relevance, reducing costs, and ensuring success.
It is important to take the time to determine the needs of your target audience, to plan the content, the structure and the measures of success to achieve the set objective.
However, other common mistakes when building a website should also be avoided. We will discover them together in the following articles.
But do note that by focusing on your website’s purpose, creating a user-friendly design and quality content, improving the user experience, optimizing your SEO and testing your website properly before launching it, you will create a website that is both professional and useful for your visitors.
